FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I do if a bracket falls off?

  • If the bracket has completely come off the tooth and is just moving around on the wire but isn’t bothering you, no need to worry, we can take care of it at your next visit. Just give us a quick call or text so we can plan for a repair when you come in.
  • If the wire has popped out of the bracket or is poking the inside of your mouth, please reach out to us. We’ll help decide together if you should come in sooner or if it’s okay to wait until your next appointment.

How will I feel after my braces appointments?

  • It’s normal to feel a little sore or uncomfortable after getting your braces on or an adjustment, this means your teeth are moving as planned. If you’re able to take over-the-counter pain relief like Tylenol or Ibuprofen, that can help.
  • We recommend eating soon after your appointment while things are still feeling okay.

What do I do if I have a Pokey or slipped wire?

  • If a wire is poking, you can carefully clip it with clean nail clippers, or give us a call and schedule a time to stop by the office and we’ll take care of it for you. You can also place orthodontic wax over the area to stay comfortable until we see you next.

What happens if I can’t make my next appointment?

Give us a call and we’ll get you rescheduled as soon as we can (standard cancellation policies apply). We understand that life happens, so please don’t worry, you can usually go up to 3 weeks past your original appointment date.

Can I get more rubber bands, wax, floss threaders, etc.?

  • Of course! Call ahead before stopping by and we’ll have everything ready for you.

What was I quoted for in my ortho/braces treatment?

  • Since everyone is different, we’re not able to estimate in a standard FAQ. If you log into your OrthoFi account, you’ll be able to find all of your information there. If you’re not finding what you’re looking for, please give us a call or text and we’re happy to help.

How often do I change my aligner trays?

  • Most patients switch aligners every 7 days, but since every plan is customized, your schedule might be a little different. If you’re unsure, feel free to call or text, we’re always happy to check for you.

I can’t get my aligners fit on my teeth very well, what do I do

  • This happens occasionally with new trays and usually improves as you continue wearing them, so you’re on the right track.
  • Try using your “saliva ejector” and gently bite down on it for about 10 seconds in areas where the aligner isn’t fitting well. This can help it settle into place.
  • If you’re concerned or it’s not improving, just reach out, we’re here to help.

I’m on my last aligner tray. I’ve been on the same tray for over a week, can I get more trays even though I haven’t seen the Doctor yet?

  • Since every treatment plan is different, it depends. Sometimes we can provide additional trays, but it’s always best to stay on schedule with your orthodontist visits.
  • If you run out of trays before your next appointment, keep wearing your current one until we see you again.

What do I do if my expander falls out?

  • Please call us right away and we’ll get you in promptly to have it put back in.

How do I turn/adjust my expander?

  • Start by reviewing the instruction sheet.
  • If you’re still having trouble, give us a call or text, we’ll walk you through it step by step.

What are my food limitations with braces?
In general, try to avoid biting directly into foods (like whole apples). Instead, cut foods into bite-sized pieces—this helps protect your braces while you enjoy your meals.

Foods to avoid

  • Sticky or chewy foods (taffy, caramels, gummy bears, Skittles, gum, bagels, etc.)
  • Hard foods (Jolly Ranchers, ice, beef jerky, chips, nuts, pizza crust, popcorn, – hard tacos, raw veggies, etc.)

Foods to limit

  • Acidic drinks and foods (like soda and sparkling water)
  • Sugary drinks and snacks

Safer choices

  • Soft foods (mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, pasta, etc.)
  • Cooked vegetables (steamed or roasted)
  • Liquids (soups, smoothies, etc.)

Pro Tip: This is a great time to break habits like nail biting or chewing on pens and pencils 🙂

This isn’t a complete list, but it’s a helpful guide. When in doubt, choose foods that are less likely to damage your braces, we’re always here if you have questions.
